Revs Update, Twellman interview 12-3
by: Tony Biscaia
December 13, 2002

The Revs are back in town for three days of indoor practices at the bubble, before the team disbands until the beginning of preseason training next year.

Many of the 2002 regulars were missing for a variety of reasons, ranging from players that have been waived (Jurgen Sommer, Ian Fuller) to just-married Revs Captain Joey Franchino, who is off on his honeymoon.

In attendance and fully participating were Nick Downing, Jay Heaps, Brian Kamler, Leo Cullen, Marshall Leonard, Steve Ralston, Tony Frias, Wolde Harris and Taylor Twellman. Goalkeeper Adin Brown and Rusty Pierce were present but did not work out for precautionary reasons, while Daouda Kante did some conditioning work but did not join in on scrimmages.

Several invited players joined the Revs and coaches Steve Nicol, Matt Driver and John Murphy for a brisk morning workout, including local goalkeepers Matt Smith from B.U. and Peter Mahoney from Brown. Brasilian forward Luis Antonio Correia, formerly with Sao Caetano, was also in on a trial basis and looked impressive in the scrimmages, as did Revs Equipment Manager Ryan Maxfield with two goals in a brief late appearance.

Former Lehigh forward Kevin Jackson was back for another look, along with an unidentified D3 N.Y. Freedoms player (Aboubcar Camara?) The N.Y. Freedoms just happen to be the team that 2002 Revs 2nd round draft pick, 24 year old Grenada international defender Shalrie Joseph, ended up playing for this past summer, after declining to sign with MLS and trying out his luck in Europe.

According to Sunil Gulati, who was in attendance along with Lou Imbriano to introduce Director of Soccer Renato Capobianco to the team, Joseph will be joining the team tomorrow after signing with MLS today.

Gulati also said that he's recently spoken to Diego Serna, who is evidently still very much in the Revs future plans and is reported to be looking forward to joining the team next season.

2002 MLS leading scorer Taylor Twellman, fresh off his international debut in a 2-0 USA win over El Salvador, spoke briefly to RevsNet about that experience and his future prospects with the National Team.

Twellman also talks about his on-going contract re-negotiations with MLS, and his younger brother Jamie, who mistakenly got a red card in his last game. Taylor will be flying out to the Bay area to see Jamie Twellman play for host Stanford University, in their NCAA playoffs quarterfinal round match-up on Dec. 7 against Clemson.
