Notebook: Nicol Named Coach of the Year
by: Mike Marshall
October 17, 2002
Steve Nicol, who took control of the Revolution on an interim basis on May 23rd, was named Major League Soccer's Coach of the Year yesterday after leading the team from last place to the Eastern Conference Championship, and a spot in the MLS Cup Final.
Nicol guided New England to a 10-10-1 record during the Regular Season, and a 3-1-2 record in the post-season. Including the two-game stretch as an interim manager at the end of the 1999 season, Nicol is 15-11-3 as a head coach, and is the only coach in Revolution history that can boast of a winning record.
Nicol edged Los Angeles manager Sigi Schmidt and Dallas Burn Head Coach Mike Jefferies for the honor.

Revs for the US?
Soccer America is reporting that six current members of the Revolution are candidates to be called up to the U.S. Men's National Team for their November friendly against El Salvador in Washington D.C. According to the report, Taylor Twellman, Steve Ralston, Adin Brown, Leo Cullen, Daniel Hernandez, and Joe Franchino will all get called into camp.
Twellman Set to Go
Injured Revolution forward Taylor Twellman took part in a full practice with the team on Thursday, and reported no pain in his tender right knee. Twellman suffered a Grade 1 MCL sprain in Game 2 of New England's semifinal series with Columbus, and sat out last Saturday's series-deciding game with the Crew. However, it appears as if Twellman has recovered enough to start.
Ruiz Named MVP
In an interview with WEEI's Dennis and Callahan Show, Twellman said that Los Angeles Galaxy forward Carlos Ruiz would be named the league's Most Valuable Player at a 12:30 press conference in Providence this afternoon. The Boston Globe reports that both Twellman and Ruiz were named to the league's Best 11.
